Hi all, I added the bin liner which annoyingly didn't help. I had an idea of adding a pot of salt like when you do to calibrate the hydrometer and, I'm still adapting it, but it seems to be helping. It was 73% yesterday and 64% today so it's getting there...

Hi All
I must confess in over thirty years of hatching tortoise eggs I have never measured the humidity. I put my eggs in vermiculite in the incubator with a bowl of water that I top up when it gets low and away we go! Mary |

My hygrometer wasn't working this year when my eggs went into the incubator so I just set it up the sÃ*me as last year, when I got round to replacing it a few weeks later I was worried as the reading was about 89% !! It is still up around there but my hatchlings are all coming out fine now so I don't think it is a massive thing to worry about.

So why do people say humidity has to be 70%........it's just making it hard for people like Dom who is trying to get things right. Dom it sounds like you should just go ahead and incubate x x x. Hugs x x x

No idea why maybe just that Sandy and I come from the old school of tortoise keeping before all these "new fangled things" were available ie we're both quite old! Sorry Sandy.
Just go for it Dom. Mary x |

Lol not a problem Mary, we are all getting older:0) I also think we tend to be more relaxed with tortoise keeping too. Letting tortoises tell us, rather than the other way around:0)

I think you are right Sandy, though I do check other forums and there is so much conflicting advice to the new keeper, and those for example going further with their torts like Dom wanting to incubate or new techniques of husbandry.
I think the great thing about this forum is how the experienced keepers can have very different ways of looking after their torts very successfully, so it gives lots of scope for different circumstances. And best of all no one falls out!!! X x x. Hugs x x x |
