Buying tortoise Eggs to Hatch
Hmmmm... We have this new administrator at work and she was telling me about her small holding today. She also explained that she buys chicken eggs to hatch. Naturally I was telling her about my tortoises and then she explianed that her friend buys tortoise eggs and hatches them. Have any of you ever heard of this?
I have to admitt I would love to have a go at hatching tortoises, I even have the equipment (given to me by a friend that used to run a city farm). But I am surprised that there are surplus egg suplies and that they are moveable... I thought they had to be kept still. What do you all think??? Any body tried it???? Jane

The only tiem i have heard of people hatching other peoples eggs out is when they are friends with someone who keeps tortoises that lay eggs and they are given to them.
Having a tortoise that will breed and lay eggs is rare never mind finding someone who will give you eggs.

I have wondered if they are perhaps the eggs of wild caught tortoises... The conversation has had me thinking all day, but as i only met the woman today, i thought best not to suggest this about her friend quite yet. But then could eggs from the wild successsfuly be transported so far??
I don't have breeding torts, but as you say Sarah, there would be no way I would give away or sell any eggs...

Maybe there are some people who sell eggs for people to hatch. I bet they sell them at a higher price than they would the baby torty once it has hatched though ! Theres' gotta be something in it for the seller.

Morning Jo!!
I am a novice at this, but the way I understand it is.... As we know tortoises will ahppily mate like rabbits (well the males will and of course the ladies put up with it ) But unless the husbandry is perfect, the female won't lay. Is that right?????

I do have a question though, how can you cites register the babies from these eggs( assuming the species needs to be) as I thought the breeder had to do this, and obviously you won't be if you just incubated them. |

I came across an ad on gumtree puporting to sell tortoise eggs - I was interested and responded. It soon became clear it was a scam.
