Retained Eggs?
Hi Chaps
I was wondering if anyone on here has had a tort with retained eggs and what had to be done about it. I have just rehomed an old gal who may have this problem...I don't know for sure till I take her to the vets but would like an idea of what I could be letting myself and her in for. She is very old, at least 60. |

it has not happened to me but i would think the vet would scan her and if there are any retained eggs maybe give oxytocin injection to expel anything there

I am sure when Sarah rehomed her female leopard she was retaining eggs - can't remember the outcome though.

But this was due to bad husbandry. She was kept in a house on carpet and would try and dig a nest but couldnt However since i got her and after a couple of weeks, she laid them all by digging a nest in deep top soil. Why do you think she might have this problem? has she a deformed pelvis?

Because she has hardley any strength in her back legs, Sarah, and it has been suggested that this may be the problem, either that or renal problems. The poor thing is pulling herself along by her front legs

Best thing to do is have an xray and see if she as any If she does then your vet will advise Oxytocin which will induce her Here is a good artical http://www.tortoise.org/general/eggbind.html

Thanks Sarah, I'm taking her to the vets Monday so I'll have a better idea of what's wrong then.
Sandy, i know she's not really old in tort terms but she's spent 50 years in a garden over here living on salad, tomatoes and apples and the like so I'm thinking she may be older physically than her age in years. We'll see |

I bet if she was in a garden she ate better than you think:0)
As she would have acsess to weeds and plants growing there, I am not saying she had a great diet. But its suprising how some of the tortoises imported from the fifties and sixties have survived living this way. They must have eaten suitable plants etc. They probably faired better than some that were kept indoors and fed things like Christmas dinner, and foods humans eat. Just trying to stay positive:0)
