Handling Horsfields

Everytime i pick Edward up to take him outside or bring him in at night he scratches me to death ive tried every way possible but i cant avoid his nasty nails! They seem quite long but Horsfields do have long nails dont they? Does anyone have any methods to avoid this? The only method i have so far is to put him in his cat litter tray i use to bath him in and carry him that way.
