Growing Plants

Hi,
I have bought a mixed bag of seeds from this site. I'm just wondering the best way to grow them. My plan is to buy a tray (around the size of a cats litter box) put some soil in, sprinkle the seeds on the soil then cover them with more soil and just leave it on the window. Will that work ok do you think?
I have never grown plants before and have only had my tortoise a week. I would rather grow my own food for him than pick it in wild (which isn't an option this time of year anyway).
