Disturbing story today from Italy

http://Italian Finance police seized 20 tortoises on Monday that were being illegally shipped into Italy. The seizure took place during a routine border check at Brindisi harbour. The tortoises, belonging to the endangered Testudo Hermanni species, were hidden in cardboard boxes inside a van. The vehicle had just gotten off a ferry coming from Greece. The animals range from 5 to 60 years old are thought to be from an Eastern European country. Police estimate the turtles could have earned the smugglers up to 35,000 euros. According to a recent report from the Italian Forestry Police Corp, illegal traffic of rare animals is increasing in Italy. Eagles, bears, panthers, and rare reptiles were among the animals seized by authorities in 2011.

How awful!! It makes me shudder to think how the torts and any other animals being smuggled are forced into confined spaces. They must suffer such stress.
