A big hello
Hello all
I have recently inherited two tortoises through a family member. Both have been in the family for 30+ years and were adults when bought. I have been trying to do as much research as I can on the web, but have found conflicting information in different places. This web site does seem to be excellent and I have spent hours reading through the past posts. The tortoises have always been fed supermarket greens, however from reading this site I have now got some weed seeds through the e-bay shop. I have also got some nutrobal and limestone flour to supplement diet. I have also just put together a cold frame that they can use. I hope you don't mind, but I have some questions - Does anyone know of a good vet in the Hertfordshire area? One of the torts has a flakey\damaged area on its shell. I would also like to get them checked for general health and wormed etc. Do you know if they should be registered with DEFRA? How do you go about doing this? Does anyone know what species and sub-species they are? Thanks Marc [img] [/img] |

Hiya, welcome from me
Where in Hertfordshire are you, would you be willing to travel for a vet? I have been recommended one in Romford? although have never used it, so can't personally recomend, maybe someone else on here can confirm if they are good or not for Marc ? Lawton and Stokes - 01708 384444

Hi Marc, Welcome to Shelled Warriors
We need straight down carapace (topside) and plastron (underside) shots to tell you the sub-species

Hi Marc,
The tortoise on the left is a female Testudo graeca graeca of most likely Algerian origin. The tortoise on the right is a female Testudo graeca ibera. Danny

Depending on whether you want to travel, there is a fantastic tort vet in Reading Bruce Maclean - I live in Bucks and would not go anywhere else with my tortoises. He is recommended by the Tortoise Trust and is highly recommended. Here's a link: http://www.herpvet.co.uk/BEAVS%20Inf...20Policies.htm With regard to the tort with flaky bits; you can gently pull away any obvious bits and gently scrub with diluted betadine. One of my torts had horrendous shell damage and this worked a treat. You only need to register the tortoises with Defra if you intend to sell them or breed from them. I have two big whitei (graeca) and the second pic looks identical to my girls and the other looks like an ibera. Nice to know there is another tort keeper not so far away! Tamie

Vets
Thanks to Toni and Tamie for the vet info. I might have to book the day off work if it turns into a bit of a trek...
I have removed some of the flakey bits and used watered down betadine. There is an area with a hole that does seem to go a bit deeper. I think it needs a vet to sort it out. Cheers again. Marc |
