Yep done the whole candling thing in the past Linda. I just wondered at what stage the chalking had shown in this case

Did not know that was a current collection, it could have been any year. To be honest I have not found the chalking to be 100% reliable. I once had a large percentage of my fully chalked eggs to be found to have contents dropped to the bottom almost immediately. I don't rely on it any more

Sue I've found chalking to be 100% reliable for knowing an egg is fertile. Not all fertile eggs hatch though. The yolk on a fertile egg will drop to the bottom of the egg, another sign an egg is fertile. Not sure what happened to your eggs Sue. Did they not hatch?
This egg is 4 days old. I'm not sure when it started to chalk, but it was chalked on the 3rd day at least.

The year before last eggs had almost 100% success but last year my normally fertile tort only produced 2 babies. Eggs looked chalky and were incubated as usual but only two hatched. I alwys break non hatched eggs and all had just yolk and nothing else except the ones that went bad. Last year the female that usually does well avoided the males by hiding in my conservatory when they were around so it will be interesting to see if I have many fertile eggs this year from her.
Can you explain what you mean when you say the yolk on a fertile egg will drop to the bottom,if this is the sign of an infertile egg please? My old tort just laid 7 eggs and the same as last year they look very yellow as though they have big yolks in them - have you seen this in eggs?

The yolk settling to the bottom of an egg is a sign that it's fertile Sue

If you shine a small torch from the top of the egg, there will be a line (not always straight) horizontally about half way down. If the yolk stands proud and doesn't settle then the egg isn't good.
I have seen eggs that are very yellow, sometimes they are good but most times they aren't.
