My mum had a tortoise in the 50's, that was a frequent escape artist, so she painted their address on his back in red nail polish. Strangers used to knock the door and return him when they found him roaming. My Nan successfully hibernated him for 5 years, but he escaped just before they moved and this time he was not brought back. I've always wondered what ever happened to him, who knows he could still be in someones garden today
