new to site
hi all after reading forums on this site now for a few weeks i wondered if someone could let me know if i have done things right. i have been reading up on hermans and hermans needs and i know there is no such thing as to much reasearch but i have read that much i have puddled my self. i now have a herman in its tortoise table i have about 60% of it covered in top soil about 30% in childrens play sand and hemp in his bed area he has a 40w reflector spot lamp which the temp reads 29/30 and a flourescent light which acts as sunlight. he has a water bowl which if he does get in it he will be able to hold his head up and currently in his food bowl he has a mixture of kale dandelion+ broccoli i am sending kids out in a bit on a weed finding trip. please can anyone point me in the right direction if i am doing anything wrong as i really want to get this right as i have been wanting a tortoise since i was a little girl many thanks

Hi
Welcome to the site. As you can see from my number of posts, I'm new too. My torty loves plantain and bind weed most. There are plenty of people on here who will be able to advise you. You seem to be doing well at the moment, though tortoises need weeds, weeds and more weeds When I first came on here my tortoise was living in a vivarium as advised by my petshop owner. Now he is thriving in a home made tort table eating weeds and going into his little home made pond for a bath The first day I put him in there he didn't sleep. He wandered around and around his table exploring everything. It as great. |

Hi,
Welcome to SW If you could post a picture of your table, that would gives us a better idea of how it's set-up. The one thing I see right off is you should lower your spot lamp a bit so your getting 32C underneath it. We'd always love to see pictures of your new Hermanns Danny

I've ordered some a week ago but with the postal strike they still haven't come back
It doesn't really matter at the moment though as, as from today Torty is going without food ready for hibernation as he has starting to slow down already |

Its not too bad looking for weeds where I live as there are loads around, but I can rest now for a couple of weeks as I am getting Torty ready for hibernation, which to be honest I'm dreading as it is my first time.

I think I am the only tortoise owner in this area, I may be mistaken but I haven't seen anyone else searching for weeds in the dark
