Breeding russian/horsfield tortoises
Hi, I currently have a 10 year old Horsfield tortoise and have had him since he was 1. I am really thinking about breeding this tortoise and have looked into it alot. One of my questions is, if I buy another female of the right age is there still a chance of her/him not wanting to mate? Thanks

Age means little, so as long as you get a female 6 inches SCL or larger than eventually you'll get eggs.

But they probably won't be able to live together full time, or the male will harass the female, potentially to illness.
Most likely you would have to plan on 2 separate enclosures (except for perhaps a month or so in Spring), or 2-3 females for one male in a large enclosure, preferably outside.

Thanks so much
I was just wondering, even if I keep them in separate enclosures, should I still keep them in different rooms because I have been told that the male wont eat if he is able to smell a female? |

I keep my male in the same room as females, different enclosure, and he doesn't seem too bothered.. still eats!

As lyn said Dont keep one male and one female together, male horsfields are aggressive in mating and harass the female which causes stress, mind you my females are quite bolshy as well x
