Nope... now you are probably going to have a humidity problem. The function of the water is more to stablize the temperature rather than to add humidity. With the water above the heat it would evaporate quicker causing a higher humidity.

What about adjusting the size of the bowls so that the surface area of the water was less?
I thought that the whole purpose of the water was for humidity rather than anything to do with temperature

The primary purpose of the water is to create a mass that helps in the stabilization of the temperature... Some folks use filled water bottles for the temper stabilization and a water tray for the humidity.

Only getting 50% humidity so far? But temps are stable at29.6oC

You do have to take into account the substrate. I believe the best means of telling how much humidity the eggs are exposed to is to cover the eggs as I have and take the reading inside the container.

I've never measured the humidity inside any of the reptiles egg containers. When I mention humidity... it's pretty much a guess.

To increase humidity you need a greater surface area of water rather than deeper containers. You can also add a sponge/s.
