horsefields
Hi all,
I'm picking up a pair of horsefields this week from a friend who can no longer care for them, can any one tell me do i need paperwork for them or are they exempt Also any advice any keepers can give would be greatly appreciated, Ive prepared a 5ft x 3ft table for them with a combined uv/heat lamp at one end. I will use a substrate of sterile topsoil with about 30% sand. I already have a leopard and will keep the setup similar only larger as there are two of them. thanks for your help Jim

Hey there, from what I've been told you don't need paperwork for these. The set up sounds fine in my opinion, but I'm no expert, just a fanatic researcher for my soon to be baby horsfield!

Just to say that horsfields dont need heat 24/7 like leopards do. And thier diet is more weed based than the grasses leopards eat.
Horsfields can also cope with much lower temperatures, as if it gets too hot for them they will dig down. Some good advice given by Kelly about the deeper substrate and less sand.

Hi there
I have three horsfields and as other have advise they enjoy to dig all day long, also when the warmer weather comes and they go outside they try to dig down to escape, so my outdoor encloser has ceramic floor tiles pushed down vertical so they cannot be seen but all around the outside so if they dig down and across they will come across the tile and cant escape hope this makes sense to you, i designed it this way so they can still dig and hide. |

Also Horsfields love to climb, so be prepared for escape attempts in your enclosures. Don't put any thing around the edges as they will manage to scale it, I promise you
Horsfields tend to be quite an aggressive species, especially compared to your leopard.
