Default New and obsessed

Hello all!

I have a 5 year old male hermann tortoise named Hermy. When I was 17 I saved up to buy my sister a hermanns tortoise for her birthday because she loved them. I had the tortoise a few days before I gave him to her and I fell in love. They have such little characters. I was so sad that I had to hand him over. I joined the army soon after and was in a place where pets weren't allowed. Then I moved to Scotland and bought my tortoise. He was from a shop and I was fed incorrect information. Told to keep him in a viv and feed him lettuce, rocket, water cress and curly kale. They also told me he didn't need to hibernate until he was at least 10 and I could keep him inside all of his life. Luckily I researched him and bought him a big table with soil and fed him weeds. I have never hibernated him and he has never had an outside space which makes me sad. But in the summer he has a guinea pig cage outside. I'm due to move again soon and no matter where I go he's definitely finally going to get his outdoor palace!

He has such a little character. I took him to vets recently and she tried to look at his tongue. To do this she was stroking his chin (I often do this) she was surprised and happy to see he stuck his head out for her to tickle him more.

I've been trawling this site for all info I can get and admiring all the cute little things here. My ambition for my future is to have a big garden with an amazing enclosure for a few tortoises (male and female separated) hopefully rescues. And then to have little hatchlings.

This was long! Sorry to ramble. I'm here for all the info and advice I can get and to talk to other tortoise mad people

I know he hasn't had the most ideal life but my vet has confirmed he is a very healthy and happy tort and I'm trying my hardest to make his life the best I can make it.

Tarzan xx

Welcome Tarzan! You've certainly come to the right place to meet tort-mad people. We're all mostly mad here!
Hermy sounds gorgeous and I hope you soon get the garden you dream of for him. It'd be great to see a photo of the little guy.

Hi and welcome!
I am like you in that mine only really live indoors and hope to soon get a house with a nice big garden for them!

They are such special animals!
