Default Hi

Hi

I live nr Newmarket and have 4 torts and love them to bits, one is very sick though and has been for 3 years. I have been force feeding her for all that time as she just wont eat. She started eating on her own for a few months and in January she stopped again. I have made the heartbreaking decision to stop feeding her and let her go but months on she is still here, amazing. 3 of them are rescues including Amelia. They are so spoilt. I have had torts for many many years and have loads of books on them. I have read till I am blue in the face to try and find a cure for my little girl and I think in that time I have acquired a bit of knowledge although am far from an expert. The shelled warriors site is amazing and so helpful. I would love to be your kindred spirit for the torts. What do you have and what do you do with them when you go away, always a problem I know. Do you weed feed. Get in contact, love to hear from you. Christine

Hi Christine, pleased to meet you!

I am now on the hunt for a tortoise - probably Hermann but maybe Horsfield. I am trying to find any for sale in UK as been advise that maybe an older rather than baby may be better!

Sorry to hear that one of your torts is ill and has been for a while. Despite you deciding to stop feeding her and let her go naturally, it seems she has other ideas I guess.

To answer your question, as yet no tortoise but imminent! And we don't go away as hubby is disabled so that is not a problem we will face. And yes, will be weed feeding - loads to choose from round here, ha!

On with my I want a tortoise quest!

I got my 2 Hermann's from Norwich reptiles shop, they were babies when I got them, then we had a really bad winter a few years back, we were away for a couple of days and they died, I was gutted and grieved with guilt so badly. I really miss them especially Harry who was a real character, this is why I have taken in the rescues I have now as a kind of redemption for leaving my babies that winter, I know it was an accident and I thought I had done everything right but I still feel such guilt, now I hibernate them all in a fridge and find that is brilliant as I can control the temp and weigh them every few weeks to keep an eye on them. My Hermann's were a delight to look after, I know 2 people who have Horsefield's and they are a bit of a pain as the are terrible escape artists and seems from what I have been told to be more of a handful than a Hermann's. But each to their own, my lot are all Spur thighs and they are really funny, each one is different in character and I adore them, good luck with your hunt, keep in contact

I am sorry about your two Hermanns. It sounds strange that after a couple of days away they had died, despite the bad weather. Had they been healthy before - and especially when you got them from the shop? You cannot blame yourself for their loss, these things happen and it all adds to the experience.

I think that I will be getting a Hermann and have a couple of options of where to get them. Just need to get everything sorted and the pennies saved and away we go! I am soooo excited - and a tad obsessed if honest, ha!

Will let you know when I have Doofus (as we have decided to call it, ha!)

Penny
