I use a shade because A) it's easy to hang on the stand by the hanger and B) if I spill water on the shade it doesn't matter but if I spill it on the bulb it might well blow it

well the manufacturer calls it a reflector I think but I call it a shade so as not to be confused with an actual reflector that you get for strip lights.

I call these shades because they don't actually reflect unless you use them with a bulb other than a combined heat+UVB bulb. The Heat+UVB bulbs have a kind of silver coating on them that reflects the light down anyway, as Jonathan says. The silver coating on the bulb doesn't go all the way to the bottom though or all the way to the top either I but don't know if that makes any odds or not. If used with an ordinary house bulb or one of those red bulbs then it would reflect the light down ..

The manufacturer calls these reflectors, same item here http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/e...arge-25cm.html

I would call this a reflector http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/a...w-12-inch.html

As you can see, some light does shine up through the holes
