if you mean the combined bulb then zooplus or surrey pets websites are both about the cheapest, if you mean the holder and reflector then don't always look for reptile equipment. I brought a good metal reflector complete with ceramic holder for around £15 from a farm/equestrian type shop near us they are also used for lambs/piglets/puppies etc so its worth looking around. Anglepoise lampstands can often be picked up at carboots etc and although they may need the wiring/holder upped to take the bigger bulbs are ideal for tables as they can be moved around and are freestanding, I'm always on the look out for things at bootsales and its surprising what can be adapted very easily and cheaply.

This is the one i was looking at. Wouldn't my UV source not be able to get around the table apart from where it is pointed because of the reflector blocking the UV.

Some people don't bother with the shade and just get a ceramic bulb holder. I'm not sure how they fix them though. Combined bulbs have to point straight down. As for the UV getting around the table, the further away from the bulb you get the less UV there is anyway to the extent that there is none but the bottom of the bulb is just about level with the bottom of the shade so the shade doesn't really affect it at all unless you got a different shade, a deep dome maybe where the bulb was way up inside. If you have a 160w bulb instead of a 100w the bulb will need to be higher and so the light will spread over a wider area than if it was a 100w that had to be kept much lower. torts should have a UV free area anyway.

This is the type of thing without a shade http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/t...ro-socket.html but I don't know what it's like, says suitable for up to 250w though - also this one http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/k...p-fixture.html more lampholders here http://www.shelledwarriorsshop.co.uk...ctors-90-c.asp

It is possible to get ceramic E27 lampholders for a few quid like Alan has pointed out and I have used these sucessfully. I tried one where I had to assemble the holder and do the wiring myself - that one was £2.99

I am not convinced that there is any benefit at all from using a shade and it can actually cause problems such as overheating. The combined lamps have a thingy inside them to focus the light anyway.

But most keepers like to have a shade and the products like the glowlight are designed for the very purpose of lighting up reptiles.

Stands are another product that are good but £30 is pushing it a bit in my opinion. I've made perfectly usable ones out of free scrap wood. They work just as well except they are a bit more tricky to adjust.

I use a shade because you are not supposed to look at the light as it is bad for your eyes, as it would be to look at the sun, so using a shade just lowers that risk.

Its a precautionary approach by the lamp makers and I'm sure in theory at least human eyesight can be damaged if someone stares into one of these lamps for long enough from a close enough range.

There is no problem for them to say we shouldnt ever look at it once it's lit, even though in practice this is a nonesense.
