Default Incubators

I have been looking at incubators but they seem quite pricey, has anyone made one? How easy is it to do? A lot of them look like a polystyrene box with sheathing mat in them.

Cheryl
I have used a homemade incubator for the last 20yrs with no problems:0)
And yes the polystyrene box is one that fish are transported in. And you can get them for free if your local tropical fish place is friendly.
www.thetortoisehouse.com has instructions on how to make, as has the tortoisetrust.

I have used a home made one for several years. Its just a poly box with a heat mat in the bottom, 2 bricks on their side which rests a wire cake cooling rack on, and a tray of water for the humidity. The heat mat is attached to a thermostat but i have always gone by the temperatures on a separate thermometer placed in the egg tray as the guide x

That's interesting, I've got the polystyrene boxes, bricks, tubs, thermostat and thermometers all I need is the heat pad and vermiculite and I could easily make some x

Sounds good you could do a step by step for me lol. Seems a good idea to do tho they are really expensive to buy rant they even the second hand ones I've seen are pretty costly.

Yes cheapest I've seen is a second hand one for £50, if I've got everything else so just need the heat mat and vermiculite so won't cost much at all, I got some large polysteryne boxes with lids from the tropical fish shop they were going to chuck them so if I need to ill make one myself.....as I like making things and it would be a sense of achievement if successful hatching.

Has anyone responded to your request for a breeding group of horsfields yet Cheryl? X

I've found a pair they have bred together for a couple of years they are 10, really want to get them but they want £400 which includes there viv etc but viv is small if you ask me 91cm so I would have to replace it pretty fast. Still thinking about it at the moment.
