Default Fluid Retention In Indian Star.

We have a 3 yr old Indian Star who has all the signs of fluid retention, swelling around the area at the top of the front and rear legs. He's moving around ok, eating well , poop looks fine but his urates are sandy. We're thinking kidney problem / infection but would appreciate some feedback. We know we will have to visit the vet, but as vets with chelonia experience are as common as hen's teeth in this neck of the woods we'd like to bring a little knowledge with us when we go. Here are a few pics taken today........

Thank's Dan , would it be a course of antibiotics and a diuretic if it was the kidney?. Any particular antibiotic to avoid , stars being a little bit particular. Also if it's a kidney stone what is the procedure ?.

No Baytril, stars do not tolerate it well. It would be easier if it was a bladder stone as opposed to a kidney stone. Diuretics will help while convalescing and may help for the short term, but won't work in the long run if there is to much damage to the kidneys. Not much can de done if there are stones in the kidneys.

Is it Bairbre O'Malley your seeing? She's not too bad with torts. I hope it's not kidney stones and it's treatable. The fact that it's still active and eating is good. Good luck.

Visited the vet yesterday, in the surgery the little guy erupted , pee and poop everywhere , kind of ruled out fluid retention !. Did some xrays and all appeared normal , no sign of stones although seemingly it can be hard to identify a build up of gritty urates. The swelling seems to be from a build up of air and the vet drained around a ml with a syringe. The vet seems to think that it is a result of a previous bout of RNS that did not clear up but also couldn't rule out damage to the air sac. He is now on a course of Marbocyl for the next 5 to 10 days so hopefully things will work .......

Thank's guy's for all the kind words and help ...
