Default Outside temps + UVB today

just as a matter of interest I took some temps and UVB reading today at lunchtime.

Temp on the ground on a piece of light coloured slate was 29.7c at 12.45pm

UVB read at 12.41pm was 76. noon is the highest reading and it drops away quite quickly as time passes.

I tried the Solarmeter through last year's Aldi plastic coldframe and the reading was 006 at a time when the direct sun reading was 65.

I also tested it through a clear plastic storage box and surprisingly it gave a reading of 40 when direct reading from the sun was 61 so two thirds of the UVB is passing through it.

Sun today was full, no clouds

Can't believe how high it was on the slate Alan, was this in the open air? I've had temps of about 30 in the greenhouse this week but don't know about outside...

yes open air out in their outdoor enclosure. there was no wind at all but it is the sun temp that matters really

The sun hitting that thermometer would be the same as it hitting a tort's shell, it would still be around 29c. If they moved out the sun it would be freezing though

It might have been 80 odd or even 90 odd at 12 noon going by the rate it was dropping as time passed. 76 is about the same as my Megaray bulb at the moment but, I was told that they can't really be compared because of the wavelengths or something. I think that 76 from a lamp is better than 76 from the sun. Back in November though I was getting only about 8 from the sun so 76 is better than that by far. the further south you go that 76 of mine would increase considerably I assume. So my 76 at 12.46pm might have been 96 for you and 116 for bindi.

it would be interesting to see what difference there was between a reading from me at 12 noon and a reading from kirkie at the same time in same conditions, same day. we are 360 miles apart

I agree, it would be interesting. You'll have to give him a shout out at the weekend Infact, you could do another thread, Alan, arrange a time and a certain day so everyone with a meter can add their data, stating where they're from, weather conditions etc

that would be a good idea bindi.

as you can see from this chart that I got a while back from uv guide, the 76 today was better than a dull day in june 2005
