Ideas for school talk on tortoises
Hi everyone
I've volunteered to give my sons reception class (5 year olds) a talk on tortoises. Just wondered if anyone had any interesting facts or wanted to give me any advice what to include for that age group? And how to anticipate any questions I might not be prepared for!! Thanks in advance Maddy Last edited by Maddy; 07-05-2014 at 09:23 PM. |

5 year olds will probably not remember many facts but if you can think of some funny things about tortoises that may help to keep their attention!
If it were me doing the talk i would definitely include a bit about how to hold them correctly and a mention of them having no teeth, that is the sort of thing a 5 year old may remember, maybe if you are taking one in you could do a speed test and time it or something, or if you are taking 2 they could have a race! |

I have done this when my children were in reception. Keep it simple, things like, what they eat, where they come from. Be prepared for questions about how do they poo and wee, how can you tell if it's a boy or girl. Some children may never have seen a tortoise and might be scared of it. I personally didn't let any of the children touch the tortoises, for hygiene reesons , as torts can carry salmonella in there gut, not worth the risk with 30 kids. I let my sons do some of the talking. But it is a great experience for the children, as many will never have seen one.

I did this last year when my son was in reception. I talked about food and what sort of country they come from. Where they live in your garden and individual personalities. Be prepared for questions about "poo and wee" which I had several of. They will all want a stroke of the shell. I had them sit in a circle and took the tortoise around rather than them crowd around and scare the tortoise (and me)
