Although not sure whether it's possible, I always want to go to see wildlife tortoises. it must be a great sight observing MANY tortoises in the wild!! Does anyone know where I might be able to do this? any organization I can contact to find out?

Yes Turkey has large numbers of tortoises and many visitors see them without even trying.

There are places in Spain and the Balearic islands as well although I think it's more localised.

I have been to look in Corsica and the south of France and it was quite tricky to see them but I did spot some after putting in a fair few hours looking..

In the summer months morning and late afternoon is often best for the med species as during the day it's simply too hot for them to be out. It is also too hot for me to be out looking for them!

Have just got back from a week tortoise watching in Turkey which was brilliant just booked a package holiday down in Southern Turkey near Fethiye and then went exploring on the local buses up in the hills. Quite hot there already so need to go out early in the morning and later in the day. Good to see them in their natural habitat.

If you ever go to south Africa you will find loads of tortoises, especially in the north, leopard tortoises and many others...I actually think it is the place with more tortoises per square mile in the world. You actually see them crossing the road etc. great place for a holiday too!
