I keep a female Horsfield and Hermann together no problem, the care is the same for both. I wouldnt keep opposite sexes together or let them breed though and would of course seperate if any problems.

hes saying that the male is trying to mate with her thou. They shouldnt be in the same house if thats the case. Should of been separated when this started. Not fair on the female.

What's the mating procedure for horsfields?
I do know what damage a testudo graeca/iberai can do to a female hermann, who would rather have her legs bitten than her carapace butted and bashed... one reasonable reason for not mixing those species and genders. But I don't know about a horsfield/hermann combination.

I would not keep a 3 year old female with a sexually mature male of any species. Have you requested a plastron picture? (as a lot of these adverts the people just decide what sex they think their tort is rather than actually checking)
I dont have experience of female Horsfields but I do have a herman female who is very dominant & often displays "male" behaviour, to any other tort, bigger or smaller than her, wobetide any smaller torts she comes across!! (hence I keep my smaller ones seperate ) so I guess a layman could just assume she is male. Might be a nice bargain there for someone |

Whatever your view on mixing of species, if one is being harrassed by the other it's a stressful and miserable existence for one of them

For anyone who keeps groups of tortoises... they know that the harrasment is not constant... it usually occurs on occasion if at all.
Let remove the fact that they are different species. This would be considered normal interaction.

I thought they were meant to be kept in a group ratio of 1 male to a minimum of 3 females so he divided his attention to the different females so they all got a break?
