Are there some turtles like torts that are better for beginners? I only ask as my friend is looking into getting some with no experience, but like me, always keen to learn from others who are experienced x

In my opinion, the best species of fresh water turtle (terrapin) for a new keeper to the hobby, is the North American Musk turtle.
