I sowed mine about March and they had grown to full size by about June. Maybe if it's done now they will get a root system developed ready for spring time

Don't know really. I gardener once told me that this is the best time to sow grass seed but then that's not clover

I would sow in Spring or little later, soon as the soil starts to warm up, after the winter, it is sown with Rye Grass for grazing fodder, in spring. It can germanate quickly then, because it has to compete with the grasses.

I scattered loads of dandelion and clover seeds this spring on my lawn and the clover took realy well, the dandelions are just coming through now so I assume they take longer to establish. I go with spring time.

This is interesting to read:

If I were you I'd do a small area now and the rest in spring and see what happens. It was red clover I planted and they didn't eat it so I pulled it all up again as it was getting out of hand
