have done searches so please dont shout at me for asking!!!
Hi all,
My female hermans. b. is pacing. I have read the threads about this and am concerned she is stressed for some reason. I have checked her temps, she has weeds, and different substrates etc so a really nice enclosure I think! COULD IT BE THAT SHE IS LONELY?? I had her in a table that she grew out of so as a quick solution I put her in a viv, but covered the glass where she could see out of as I knew this could stress her. but she still paced lots, I have now built her a table thats much bigger and better and she is still pacing! I have only literally put her in and thought it would be her just getting a look at everything new, but she is still going round and changing direction etc. I did have her outside lots when the whether was nicer so this could be it but its been real chilly recently (birmingham) in the evening so she has to come back in, and a few days ago she stopped eating, she has a few morsals from my hand but not even touched her dinner (I checked and counted leaves!). starting to get really worried. I have been thinking about getting another one as a friend (not a male though) would this help do you think?? thanks for listening to my woes!

i very much doubt that being on her own would cause her to pace arround
i hope she will settle soon this is her 3rd home change so it may take her a little time to settle |

I don't think its anything to do with being lonely if she has always been on her own, it could be the move to the new table, many tortoises are beginning to eat less now. I have found my Hermanns very restless and one of the Margies, I think they do miss being outside but its just too cold here as well, when I do try them out they just bury down.
Tortoises are very good at sensing a change in the weather and naturally now they will slow down, eat less and want to go to sleep, or go the other way and become very restless. Has this tort been hibernated before and what are your temps on the table warm and cold ends ?

How large is she? Have you considered that she could be gravid?

yes I did think it might be the stress of the move as it were! I'll leave her a week and see if theres any change, she has always had an odd day when she hasnt eaten so Im prob just over worrying!
Thanks for your concern just one more thought can she lay with out a male present? I keep thinking maybe she is egg bound or something horrid...im a bit of a hypocondriac when it comes to my baby!

Yes, she could have eggs without a male. Do you have a suitable nesting site incase she is indeed gravid?

she is a 2005 baby, last measurement was 9.9cm and 203.6g (ratio of 0.21), this is my first winter with her so I didnt want to hibernate her.
her temps are 33 at heat lamp end and 20 at cool end. she has soil at one end, hemp hay at the other and oyster shell and slate and a few rocks and plants in the middle! when she was in the previous viv the soil was deeper and so I thought she may have done her stuff in there but no sign of her even digging in it. she would did down at night but in the hemp.

You can rule out her being gravid straight away then. I do find Hermanns as a species are much more restless than others, mainly, I think, because they are so greedy and always looking for more food.
