Cider pears and apples are still going to contain sugers, it's the sugars that form the basis of alcohol.

Another point is that the "friendly" bacteria in a tortoises gut, the ones that aid digestion, are thought to require a steady Ph level. Fruit will unbalance the acidity of the gut causing either a die off of the useful bacteria or a bloom of less useful bacteria. Personally I think this is why Testudo
tortoises overfed on fruit often show symptoms of diarrhea.

Thanks RFM, When talking about alcohol I am on steady ground. A subject very close to my heart (and my liver). I must go and lay down now, one too many fermented apple drinks at the cricket yesterday (and no I was not involved in any betting scandals).

Has anyone read Hermann's Tortoise: Boettger's and Dalmatian Tortoises and finished with it ? Happy to buy it from you ?

I think you mean Hermann's Tortoise by Holger Vetter. this is an excellent text and I suggest is a definate keeper in the home library. Though I have read it several times, the value of it a a continuing reference makes the cover price one certainly worth paying.
I should add, that all the books in this publishers : Edition Chimaira collection are worth having in the home library!
