Default Perfect Tortoise Weather

I love this weather - warm and bright without being sticky and uncomfortable. The torts are loving it. Just popped out to see if I could find any of them.

I'm reading Wolfgang's book (again) and I want to get more limestone chips and a bit more gravel to mix in with the soil again. Anyone got any recommendations what size gravel you use for a more natural substrate?
I have lots of pieces of granite, huge pebbles and wood and the shrubs have matured nicely so it's reasonably naturalistic but I know I can do better. Wolfgang is always inspiring. Throw your suggestions at me!!!

Hope you all have a happy and safe weekend. x

Great news, Gordon. You’ll have plenty of hatchling photos for us then.

lovely photos Emma, they are nice looking tortoises. Your habitat looks amazing too. I will have a think. Did you see that photo at the back of wolfgangs house - the whole garden under netting if I recall and masses of tortoises in the foliage, CB

Yes, Clare, his book is pure porn to me. I just love looking at the photos in there. I love the side-by-side pictures of a tort in its natural habitat and then one in his enclosure and you can barely see a difference. His enclosure is fabulous.
I don’t think netting would work here, which is a shame as I’d love some yucca and I think gorse would be great too but with the birds of prey, foxes and cats I’m happier with a solid lid with metal mesh.
They have plenty to clamber over in the enclosures, a good variety of edibles, hot spots and plenty of shady, hiding areas. I want to calcify the soil a bit more with limestone again and have a better gravelly substrate.

yes I like arid , which is why I do use a lot of shingle - my goodness they just sleep most of the day on warm stones or concrete then mow the lawn it couldn't be better. I learnt a lot about sex from Wolfgang
that's not liable is it !!
