Not sure where you're based, but I found some excellent pieces of slate at Thompsons builders merchants in Crews Hill, and very cheap too. I guess the builders' suppliers are gonna be cheaper than B & Q ....

Try your local tile shop (or an online supplier) most will give you a sample (especially if you say its for your large untiled kitchen floor!)

I thought I just replied to this one but it seems to have gone. Anyway, I use natural slate floor tiles from B&Q, they were about £10 for a pack of 5 and are 12 inches square. The water dish and the food dish both sit on one, the bigger the better because it helps stop the food ending up on the soil, though it still often does. the other 3 tiles I use for outdoor hides supported by 2 bricks

here's one as a water dish/food dish slate

and one as a hide

they might be more than a tenner a pack now but worth every penny even if they were £15 it would only be £3 each still. Sometimes you get knockdown end of range for a fiver a pack

They love hides like this dont they Allan? I have a fancy roofing ridge tile cemented onto two breeze blocks in Sid's garden & he's always under there, the kids call it his temple! I got another 2 from a reclamation yard for £1.50 each which I have just placed on the ground as the hermans can still fit under - I think they feel safer under something.

There are websites you can order free samples from, you can get upto four. Here is a link to one of them but if you search google there are loads of sites providing free samples.

there was one a couple of years ago that everyone on here was getting samples from, you were allowed 4 samples. An old ruin would have some lying around.

Actually, I remember they used to sell slate in my fish (aquarium) shop
