I agree that the second one is bittercress (and edible )
I recognise the first one but can't put a name to it. The leaves remind me of my African Violet, so it may be from the violet family possibly.

it does look a bit like jack by the hedge a bit but it appears in April/May and that picture looks like it's been taken in an area of woodland maybe rather than a roadside. Isn't there a one called dog something that looks like that, dog violet maybe? My book has been 'tidied up' which is what happens in this house if you leave anything lying about for more than 30 seconds so I have no idea where the book is now :/
Edit.. not dog violet as the violets are heart shaped leaves. It might be JBTH then and photo maybe taken in April? You can tell by the smell when crushed if it's garlic mustard Last edited by Alan1; 22-11-2013 at 07:04 PM. |

We get little ones like that popping up here Alan after the plants have gone to seed. They stay little like that till next spring.

I would say that is similar to JBTH but I dont reckon it is. I have seen plants that look just like it but I cant say that where thats growing looks like where Jack would grow. The plant looks almost bedded into the ground. Even weeny bits of Jack (it is still about due to it being mild last month) - seems to have some stalk or stem that lifts it. The ground looks a bit furry, moss like? I cant say i have ever seen JBTH hedge growing in such places (although who knows what others have seen). Yes if picked it will smell a bit, the leaves are quite rough in their texture - they arent smooth.
The other one yes, looks like daisy leaves. My parents got it all over their back garden...so poor Lils got zip out here xx |
