If I were to hibernate my torts (and who knows I may do this eventually some day) I would be doing it because it suited me to do so, not because that's what happens in nature. By that I mean that it may get to the stage where they are too big for me to keep indoors for a long time in winter due to space. I know from reading posts that many other people do it for that reason too but are reluctant to admit to those reasons. Some people do admit that it suits them to do so though. I don't see anything wrong with admitting to that, better that than pretending they are doing it because it's natural .. then putting them in a fridge

its natural to hibernate and im trying simulate that in a fridge cos its easy for me to regulate and eventually i want it to be as close to being in the wild as possable so one day he will do it on his own
i love and look after my tortoise if im treating him bad or miss treating him i want to know but it just seems like a difference in opinion and whats wrong with that

I hibernate my tortoises because now its a pattern they are used too.
Even if I keep temps spot on, feed favourite item etc they are still sluggish. When they waken, its as if the batteries have been charged and they are raring to go. It slows down growth, my marginated tortoises are very smooth and I believe hibernation has helped this.
It was my choice and it has worked for me, but its not for everyone and I respect that just as respect Eds views on the subject. His views are as relevant as everyones elses and its a forum where we are all free to express our tortoise keeping methods. This is a friendly forum so lets keep it that way, we are here because we love our tortoises, to help others and enjoy it not to pick on people who think differnently.
