Early to bed

Dexter (my tort) goes to bed sometimes 2 hrs before his light goes off, he heads for his hide area at the cool end. The question is can I just turn his light off early (its on a timer), he has a CHE in his hide set at 20c so his temp should still be ok

Suppose you can if you want. I just let the timer switch mine on and off regardless of what time they go to sleep

You can, but the idea of the light being on for 12 hours a day or more is to mimic a warm sunny day, this helps torts to be active and do the things torts do.

I do turn mine off occaisionally, but not every day as i want the little guy I have indoors to think it's summer in the Med!

. He goes with the timer most nights I was just wondering

You could turn it off... I never bother though and let the timer do the business. Joe does surprise me and go for a late wander occasionally.

I sometimes leave mine of for a whole, sort of giving him a cloudy day, and it saves on the leccy for a tiny bit lol

Knowing your Tortoise is the key, if happy to turn in as you have a ceramic back up and wakes to bask when main light's on. Then there's no problem, keeping active through Autumn to spring would need longer hour's of basking light's. To try and trick into not slowing down, sometimes above the 12 hours false day time.
