Just out of curiosity... what are the legalities of keeping boxies in Ohio. Do you have them set up in the yard.

I found they were extremely common in IL. They are extremely common here in GA but I'm not allowed to keep them.

Ed ... if there are plenty where you are why are you not allowed to keep them?

In Ohio, you need a permit. You aren't allowed to remove , or return to the wild. They are in decline in Ohio because of traffic, many are killed. Mine were all bought from other states. When I was a kid, I always had box turtles as pets. I would find them, usually after or during a rain, keep then a month or three, and then take them back to the woods when I got tired of them. There were some I found year after year. Never found anything but adults. Many had initials or dates carved into the shell. The earliest I found was 1916.(about 10 years ago)

Archaic laws dictate that I cannot keep Boxies, Spotteds, Cornsnakes, Ratsnakes, common Skinks... anoles... all those common pets in the herp world native to Georgia. That's the way the law is written here. It's easier to ban everything than it is to allow quotas.

I think that a number of US states have these laws. Was there not a spate of quite high profile Reptile hobbyists caught up in a legal wrangle last year, in New York, and New Jersey?

I didn't see that one but there was a guy who got busted here a few years back. He was actually within the guidelines of the law but lost half of his collection before he got them back.
