Law re: tortoises to be chipped
I am planning to have some of my tortoises chipped. But I am somehow confused about several things.
I know it used to be law that a tortoise over 100 mm plastron length needs to be chipped if you are selling her or if you breed from her. Somehow there is in my head that it has changed to 60 mm plastron length. Has the law changed or have I only imagined it? I tried to persuade my vet that it is 60mm now, but the vet insisted that it is 100 mm plastron. Also, I read somewhere (possibly here) that there are some smaller sized chips available. Can anyone advise anything about it? What is the name of it? Did you ask vet to use for your tortoises those tiny chips, or are the 'normal' chips alright? My vet said that they only have the 'normal' size chips, but if I insisted on some special, they could order it (but then I would have to tell him what exactly I want, which I don't know). |

In order for you to register the hatchlings you will need to have the paper work for the adults changed to include your details and microchip number.

There called micro-chips the smaller ones. If you sell the hatchlings before 60mm then you don't need to chip them.
Defra are very helpful for advice. |

If you don't want to sell, do you have to/should you change the paperwork to your name and have them chipped?
I plan to do so, I just wondered x

I am not thinking about my hatchlings and about selling. My Big Boy was bought nine or ten years ago as a tiny tortoise and therefore his paperwork is still the transaction certificate and not the specimen specific certificate (if I understand that correctly). I wasn't planning to breed from him, but as things happened, I will have to have him chipped, arrange his new certificate and then I will arrange the certificates for my babies (without chipping them at this moment) so that they have their correct paperwork.

Can anyone post here the link where I can get all the information? I have never submitted the paperwork yet. I went to Defra webside and couldn't find anything... Defra seems to be a huge organisation dealing with all sorts of animals, including farm animals and somehow I am missing where they posted the bits about tortoises.
If anyone has a phone number to Defra helpline or something similar, that would be even better! |

This should help
http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/imports-exports/cites/ On the left hand side of the page you will see a list under the cites heading , click on forms, and you will see at the top of the list A10 certificates , click on this. Hope this helps.

I have looked at the link Suze very kindly posted, but I am not very clever from that. Can someone summarise what do I need to do? My understanding is that for the 9-10 year old male (the father of my babies) I need:
1. Have him chipped 2. Fill out the relevant form 3. Send them the form and cheque 4. Maybe send them the copy of his old transaction certificate? Anything else to send them? Anything else to do? |
