Right now I have a little tortoise in his own enclosure indoors. The uv is 24 watts and the heat is 50 watts via a halogen lamp. If I just used the halogen it is correct that the tortoise would be warm enough, but he would not have enough light. This is disregarding the actual uv health question.
The cost of providing uvb separate from heat is really very low with the latest tubes which last for years. The poor performance, low reliability and short lifespan of many combined bulbs has given uv lamps a bad reputation. You never know PQ, that uv might not be out of your price range. But I've given up on any hope of having a good argument on here these days. Everyone is so agreeable!
