Well done for persevering. I went through the same torture.
Lovely to see Clyde and hope to see lots more of him. He probably won't leave all that food!

wonderful picky Laura. Such a sweetie.
A good accurate way to measure surface temps is with an IR thermometer. They are pretty cheap on Amazon or other well known sites - don't go for fancy as you wont need it. just point and shoot with a reasonable temp range. They don't do them in pink which is a huge disappointment but the yellow ones seem the most popular. CB

I am always a little at odds with what other TK's say with their Horsfields. Ive had a little community of them for many many years and they've never been under a lamp (apart from two little rascals last year !) and have thrived outside and naturally hibernate. They could move out of a 42 degrees greenhouse (yesterday ) but don't but they seem to dilike the direct heat and will become lethargic or burrow. sooo...for all my tortoises under lamps I keep them around 26 - 29 and they are fine with that but others to keep them at optimum heat up to 32 degrees. So to answer your question top of shell (surface heat ) should be no more that 32 degrees but were he 26 - 29 degrees don't worry. Like us some of us love it hot others less so...! CB
