100w bulbs
Can you use ordinary 100w household light bulbs to provide heat in your tortoises enclosure ratehr than buying the compact heat bulb things?

To provide extra basking heat I use the small 60w spotlamps from Homebase in some of the tables. But for the Redfoots who dont like too much light, I use the ceramic bulbs, Sarah and Darren both sell them, and they last for much longer than a light bulb. Dont forget you will still need your UV lamp/tube.

ITs jsut cos I found these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT. Says they can alst 3 years and was jstu wondering as they're cheaper than the heat bulbs. My heat bulb has jsut blown and haven't ahd it for that long, lost the receipt typically so wondered if you can sue the normal bulbs?

At the moment i've sjut put 60w bulbs in as the heat light broke and the hot end is at 27 degrees? So surely a 100w bulb should be sufficient?

the best thing is to try it and see, if you get the temps then you've saved some money and if not you can always use them elsewhere, you can always make a foil sheild to direct the heat downwards.

Normal bulbs are no goo then throw light and heat everywhere
You need a spot bulb as it directs the heat down, creating a basking spot

you can use a metal shade to direct the light/heat.

I found it still doesnt have the same effect Ann, spot bulbs are 100% better.
