help with baby Sulcata
I need to find a tort vet in west midlands asap, i purchased a sulcata just before Xmas and now he/she does not seem well at all. the sulcata is about twice the size of 2 pound coin so i would have thought its very young.
Symtoms: Not opening eyes Very inactive not going to the toilet eating very little What we have been doing: constant water in the table Baths 2~3 times a day Redi grass as food (mixed with grass from the garden) no weed killers or anything used in the garden Calcium powder temp= 100 at hot end, going down to 80 at cool end substrate= top soil. I cannot see that we are diong anything wrong, so a vet trip it is, can anyone help. Many Thanks Karen

I would try and keep her at the high heat end it seems to me that she may be too cold. Sulcatas are desert animals so hot and dry is the key. One bath a day is sufficient you could try putting Critical care into this to help boost her appetite.
A variety of foods is good for her such as fruit and vegetables the readigrass is good mine love it. Is her shell hard? Good Luck keep us posted. www.ukchelonia.info Another good tortoise vet is Robin Bone in Solihull or Acocks green would be Acocks tomorrow. 0121 7061870 It's the 608 vet group in Solihull. |

I have read that Sulcata's can be put off food by, too cold and also, too hot. They are usually found in a belt of land not desert and not total savannah, and have there monsoon season, have burrows in the wild with a recorded humidity of up to 50%.

ok not good news i'm afraid.........the vet (Robin Bone) doesn't expect george to survive untill tomorrow, he told us that george is very underdeveloped and would have been born this way, he has a serious lack of vitamin A and almost no bone density and there is no way the shop should have sold him as his survival rate is almost non excistant.......the vet is suprised that he has lived this long.........but we are not giving up he opened his eyes slightly today........the vet is keeping him at the surgery, giving him liquid food, high doses of vitamin A, but he has told me to expect the worst tomorrow, i have told the vet money is no object, hundreds even thousands if need be.......just try everything and anything that he thinks will help.
will keep you posted Karen
