Fridge temps too high?
My fridge will NOT get to 5 degrees. I have it at the lowest setting, and it is always between probably 5.5-7 degrees. My min max thermometer has decided to break, and so I only have one thermometer working. I dont know what to do to get the temperatures down, I have lots of bottles of water and stuff in there to stabilise the temperatures etc. Help

Try taking a bottle out or more gap's to see if it alter's, 5.5c to 7c seem's not to bad.

Why would taking a bottle out make the temps lower?

Don't know, can't remember if you get lower temp's if the fridge is empty or higher, the bottles are placed in to try and stablise the temp, worth a try, is it a compressor type fridge. I use Box method, up's and down's and all, 4c to 7c

Im not sure what kind of fridge it is... Well I dont think the temps go over 7 degrees so it should be okay... I think the temps are lower now the bottles are in there so will leave them in I think

Where are you measuring the temp? i attach the probe to the carapace or place underneath the plastron , that way you make sure you are actually seeing the temp the tort is. If the probe is placed in the fridge un attached then it will suffer from more fluctuations( as the air in the fridge rises and falls in temp more frequently ) than that the tortoise is experiencing.

With my fridge (no torts involved here), when you open the door to put stuff in or take stuff out, the temp rises really quickly. we have a fridge thermometer in there and it has the 'safe' zone marked on it 0c-5c but within seconds of opening the door the warm air rushes in and it shoots away up.
could it be yours has risen a degree or so just by opening the door? |

hi there
i replied to a post a couple of days ago concerning cutting a piece of seal from door of fridge to allow air in,this method is much better than opening the door every so often because when the door is open all your nice cold air is gone. a fridge is useless with the door open. is it an old fridge?it may just need a new thermostat, then again it might be more cost effective to buy a new fridge.fridge yes, wine cooler no. xmas wishes dave |
