Default Sallys rather odd children

Sally is a domestic hen from work whos job is to rear otherbirds chicks.

Here she is with two crowned cranes from west Africa , they are bigger than her but she stll loves them all the same

These too will be featured on the channel 5 zoo days programme

Do you have to train a foster mother, or do you just pick one that shows the tendacies?

Sally is an excellent foster mum she has been used 3 times this year , first she reared a clutch of Himalyan Monal phesants , then she sat a clutch of Laysan teal eggs (she didn't rear them ) and now the Cranes.

Sandy they do go through a process before rearing .
What happens is they lay a clutch of there own eggs in there own quarters then the desire to sit comes over them ,her own eggs are replaced with dummy eggs till she is settled then she is transfered to the rearing room and housed in a broody hen pen where she is given dummy eggs again till she is settled , then she is either given eggs to incubate of another bird speices such as ducks , pheasants or she may be given incubator hatched chicks to rear replacing her dummy eggs with the chicks like in this situation with the cranes.

Usually they are vetran rearers before trusting with cranes Sally is from stock that have proved them selves over and over again.

She is a cross breed worthless except as an egg layer in the outside world but worth her weight in gold asa foster rearer at the zoo.
Shes a cross between an asil x araucanax silkie
