Maggie's not well :(
Hi
Just wondering if anyone else had a dog with Cushings disease? My vet thinks Maggie has it and she's having lots of blood tests at the moment, she's also just been diagnosed with a heart murmur and has epilepsy too, poor thing! Just wondered if anyone knew a bit more about it. I think I might move into my vets...or maybe I could get a job there..might be cheaper! Lily X

My Bichon Josh has Cushings. He was diagnosed three years ago and is now 13.5 years old. He responded really well to the tablets which are vetoryl 60 mg and I break them in half and give him them twice a day. They are more effective that way. Every 6 months he is blood tested to see if his dosage is correct. Unfortunately these tablets cost 43 pound per month. I hope you have insurance aand that it covers you for ongoing medication. You really wouldn't know that josh is ill and is in really good nick for a thirteen year old.
Please feel free to pm me if u need to discuss i know how upset I was when Josh was diagnosed. here's a picc of him at the seaside Fingers crossed Lynne and Josh

Forgot to tell u a bit about the disease..
Cushings is production of too much steriod in the liver ( i think i 've got that right) Josh's symptoms were a very bloated stomach, his hair went very fine, he was and still is hungry all the time and devours his dinner like a gannet. If you don't get the medication right it can turn into Addison's disease which is production of not enough steriod. This disease can shorten the lifespan of the animal but it is beneficial if the animal develops the disease when they are older as it doesn't shorten it as much.

Is Maggie a dachshund? I think like Bichons they can be prone to Cushings. How old is Maggie? Do you have a pic I would love to see her..
I think we both have shares in the vets. This week my ill rabbit cast 75 pounds she was peeing blood and had to be spayed as her womb was full of blood and little tumours, fingers crossed we've caught it in time. Then Josh's blood test was due and that and his tablets came to 125 pounds. I don't care what they cost though I love Josh to bits and would go into debt for him and i hope i have to pay for his tablets for years....

Hey I've just pm'd you Lynne! Yup she's a Dachshund....prone to every condition under the sun it seems like! Hope your bunny is ok now, my bunny costs me lots too as he's prone to eye infections and he only has one testicle (the other one is there apparently...it's just stuck!) bless him!

Hope that Maggie starts to feel better soon.
My cat George tested positive for Cushings when they were trying to find out what was wrong with him but they said that it is probably a false positive because of the diabetes. Turns out it is something else. Fingers crossed for you.xxxx |
