What a fantastic old tortoise, a similar age to my old Sammy. He's doing pretty well then. I'm sure he will get used to his fading sight and adapt.

Sorry to read this, Grandad is a lovely old tort.

As far as I know Ultraviolet radiation is the major cause of cataracts, I presume this might be the same with torts. Really we should all be wearing Sun Glasses while out picking weeds etc.
I have a Spur Thigh in her late 30's and most of the time she will protect (cover) her head from the Sun if it is reasonably strong ! She won't stay under a MV UV lamp either, the only artificial basking heat source that interests her is her large Infra-red lamp and she loves that.

Our lenses absorb UV light before it can reach the retina, many people who have had cataract operations can see some UV light. The lens may absorb UV to prevent damage to the retina or an alternative theory is that seeing UV light is a disadvantage as are vision is actually sharper with UV filtered out.

Kestrels see in to the UV spectrum, they hunt voles by seeing the UV light reflected off their urine, voles constantly scent mark their trails. But a kestrels lifespan is far shorter than ours or our torts so they may have no need to protect their eyes from the cumulative effects of UV !

Vet sais that blind torts do. do ok as they do use smell more than sight. He did say its only just started so hes doing well at his age. He lived outside 24/7 and was left to it by previous owner.

What a fantastic name he has, so appropriate for his age. It sounds like you are doing a fabulous job taking care of an old boy.
