Question optimum humidity for a horsfield tortoise

Hello I am just wandering what is the optimum humidity for a horsfield tortoise. I just got some top soil from b and q and it was quite moist. I feel as it is still drying out the humidity is dangerously high. My hygrometer is reading 70 considering they are a hot desert kind of species I am very worried. She is also starting to slow down a bit and is not eating as much could this be the problem? Also what do I do to solve it.
Any of your help is appreciated.
Birdie

I believe it's 50-60% Birdie, but I'm far from an expert. I've had a bag of topsoil open in the living room this week giving it an occassional blast with the halogen heater in order to dry it out a little

I don't believe there is an 'optimal' humidity for Horsefields tortoises. There are periods of extreme moisture althought they are short. Having high humidity for a few days will not harm them as long as it is warm.

From your last statement it sounds like your temperatures are not high enough. If that is the case the high humidity could lead to respiratory problems. You should get your temperatures up to a minimum of 25C and a basking spot of at least 30C or higher.

I haven't got a clue about humidity but when I put the topsoil in the torts enclosures, the lights seem to dry it out pretty quick. xx

Topsoil is always moist when I get it but tbh it dries out so quick! I get the impression from my two they like it when it is moist, they love getting muddy.

It will dry quick. You'll have more problem keeping it moist enough to be able to be dug without getting in their eyes.

You tortoise in a viv or a table? That makes a big difference, if it's in a table it should be fine as long as things are warm enough. If it's in a viv topsoil needs to be too moist to be safe.
