They are truly amazing animals. large and powerful. The heating bill won't be anything like keeping larger herds of hermanns and iberas 8) but I'm ready for it because I have them too! Feeding is much easier than you think, just need the right sources. It's a looooong way before this animal will reach such huge dimensions, so the future is being well planned out.

just out of interest ... what do they eat? is it weeds the same as most others (obviously lots of whatever!!) or do they have a strange diet?

There are a few reputable breeders here in the USA who have offspring available quite often, but they're definitely not a common tortoise. The way I've noticed it is that you'll see some available for a while and then they'll dissapear. Obviously the price of these animals is what makes them seem so rare. They are very expensive but it's kind of an investment and you are paying for something that is an incredible animal that will be around for what seems like forever. These tortoises take a little bit more fruit in their diets so it is ok to offer it to them. My ibera, boettger's, hermanni's and other do not get any fruit ever. Grasses, weeds and other greens are also offered.
