Year of the Hermanni Hermanni
I'm still working hands on here with Testudo hermanni hermanni and this past year (2011-2012) has been one for the books. The animals have been doing so well, and have been reproducing more than ever. About two weeks ago, in one night, two of our females nested right next to each other. The smaller female produced three eggs where she usually lays one and only sometimes two. The larger female "Bumblebee" (see her in the Jan. 2011 issue of Reptiles Magazine) produced a record breaking clutch of FIVE eggs. In more than ten years of working with these tortoises, I have never witnessed such a big clutch and it was very exciting to see this. All eight eggs from that night are fertile and they will be added to the group of "up and comers" as I call it. Here are some photos reflecting on the project:

Nice comparison. Outside of the size... I can't see any remarkable difference between the two.
What is the smallest egg producing female T.h.b. you have or have recorded? What do you sell the T.h.h. babies for?

Thanks everyone.
Ed, the smallest boettgeri I had produce was exactly 6" on the dot. I am sure people have recorded smaller than that. As for hermanni hermanni, the smallest producers I have are either just at or just shy of 4". I haven't sold any Thh babies in a while because I am holding this year's and last year's back. Last time I sold them they were $350 to $400 each. |
