Infra red linear heater

Does anyone use or know where I can get an infra red electric heater below 500 watts output please? It has to be linear rather than a spot lamp and the output needs to be directional.

sorry i didn't think about them, there quite good i use them , the 500 watt is a better option than a smaller one .

No worries. I just ordered the 250 watt but it's for a smallish area. I've ordered the 500 watt one I linked originally and a pulse proportionate thermostat for a bigger space now.

These are a safer version of the old trough heaters, well they actually look like a trough heater all wrapped up in a safe cage.

If any of you dont know the surface temps of these things can go up into the 300-400 degree C mark. There were plenty of fried snakes and lizards years ago with unguarded ones. Also the wiring was prone to burning out unless heat proof cable was used, and many scorched vivs.

In fact i still run some of the old trough heaters with home made gaurds etc, they are very long lasting, ive never had one fail yet in 20 years of using.

As for the built in pulse thermostat, does this have an external probe?

Hi Andy,

I read the tech spec of the AHS system earlier and they do have a built in failsafe with a surface temperature activated tripswitch. Shouldn't be a problem as the tortoises won't have access to the unit the way I'm thinking of installing it.

"If the metalwork exceeds approximately 70 degrees Celsius

then the trip will cut the power to the ceramic heater irrespective of

what the thermostat is indicating."

The pulse proportional thermostat was going to be for use with the 500 watt version I linked to at the start which I'm going to trial over a large area indoors but I've just realised I didn't check what it's rating is. I normally use thermocontrol pro II's which are rated to 1000 watts. This is the habistat one.

Basically, I want to move away from spot lamps for heating and I'm hoping something mounted much higher might give me a bit less intensity and a humidity level not so dry in the basking area whilst still acheiving good basking temperatures. I wanted linear, directional ones so I can create a range of temperatures over a larger area than I can acheive with a lamp.

And it gives me something to do whilst the tortoises are in the H word.
