fright of my life
This afternoon I was just in one of the front bedrooms putting some washing away when i heard a funny noise coming from the back bedroom where i keep the tortoise table.. I opened the door and had the shock of my life as there was a bird flying around. i shut the door again whilst i got my breathe back, then when i opened it again he was sitting on the tortoise box., but when i moved he started to fly everywhere. this just freaked me out so i had to call hubby to come home from work to capture it.
I KNOW I AM A SUCH A WIMP hubby managed to catch it in a towel then released it thru the window whilst i hid. luckily the tortoises were ok as they are in the 3rd week of wind down so are burried. the bird must have got into the loft , fell down the soil stack and pushed the loose piece of board from when we had another visitor last year SO now hubby has to cover up the stack in the loft ooopes sorry mods i have posted on the wrong thread. will you move it please |

right here is the answer. a soil stack is what everybody has attached to their home for obvious reasons. only some homes have them built internally purely so their homes look cosmetically better from the outside.
it is basically just a grey pipe that is housed inside a boxed off area. the reason it extends up onto the roof is for ventialtion only well thats the best i can explain it as all this is the hubby's dept. |

oh, i didnt know either, i know its to let the gasses escape now though, a couple of years ago ours got ripped off the back of the house by a storm (if anyone in ym area remembers) it was like 70+mph winds which riped loads of ariels and roofing tiles off, let alone the damage to trees!

are you talking about what hubby would call a stench pipe, and the gases would be the smelly ones that come from the toilet and drains or am I totally off track, if so I know the ones in france aren't very good because we had a lot of nasty smells and hubby said the stench pipe wasn't tall enough.

yes i suppose you could call it a stench pipe. but i can assure you that we don't get no smells from this in the house at all. you don't even know it's there as it is all cleverly boxed in. it's only the birds who seem to find a way into the casing NOT the actual pipe.
