my dad was once going to buy me a slow worm so we went into a reptile shop were they keep allsorts of snakes and lizards and when we asked they said they didnt keep them, becuase you need a special licence which im guessing is the same kind of thing that you get for some species of tortoise?

it depends upon the type of slow worm, if it was a british(european) slow worm then u need a linece to keep and handle them, but some can be yet as pets but these are often refered to as legless lizards.
