What's up with Horace
My temps are, basking lamp 35c and room temps 25-27c. Horace has plenty of room to cool down. I have a 4 foot table with an upstairs section. The last 5 days Horace has been really lazy Some days he wakes up comes out to bask but only for a few mins then back he goes to bed. For the first time since I have had him he never got up at all yesterday. I new he was ok because I could hear him. Today he did not get up again, so I got him up, give him a warm bath with Retoboost for 10 mins then give him another bath to get the residue off him. I then took him outside but he just wanted to hide, so I brougt him back in and he went stright back to bed.
Horace is eating, nice dry nose and lovely clear eyes. I had him wormed last month and the vet was happy with him. Sorry for the long post. I just don't know why he is acting like this. Horace is a Horsfield tort. Thanks for reading this post. |

What age is he Horace? It's such lovely weather it's a shame you can't get him outside. They really thrive in the sun.In view of the heat at the moment I would think 35*is possibly a bit hot but they do tend to hide at times anyway.Worming does take it out of them a bit too.Doesn't sound like anything's up with him and they are a bit nervous when they first go outside.

It is probably the temperatures are too high and Horace is just sleeping it out. Giving him the opportunity to go outside where its cooler might help.

Horace loves going outside. He has a good outside enclosure. The temps in the room where he lives is 25c today. Horace again as not come out. i just don't know what to do. His set up is the same. I will just leave him there today. I have opened one side of his hide and have put a lamp shining into where he is sleeping but no sign of him Horace is not showing any signs of illnes. |

I think room temp of 25 is possibly a wee bit high and Horace is just sleeping it off as someone else said. Can you get a bit of cool air into the room; open a window or a door (but not so he's in a direct draft). Know what you mean about the weather - depressing!! I think getting him outdoors would be best - as long as it's mild and he has somewhere he can shelter from the rain.

you might be right Horace did poo Saturday no poo since then, but he did have a lot to eat on Monday. So if he does not poo tomorrow Horace might be ill? I think so. He looks great BUT something is telling me he is not right. I KNOW Horace and his behaviour. I am so Sad. I have TRYED my Best.......

I think your worrying too much. It's been quite warm and the temps in your room are very warm. Tortoises tend to hide away and sleep it out when its too hot for them. Just wait until you can get him outside he'll probably pick up.

Thank you Helen. I opened the window wide last night this morning the temp was 21c Still no Horace but i got home at 12.50pm and he was coming out of his hide. Great, I give him a bath, afterwords I new what he would do and he did, back to bed! I stopped him, give him a bit to eat, which he took out of my hand, then went back to bed.
