Question Marginated Indoor Housing?

Hello,

This may seem like a really silly question, but I am looking into the housing options for my new tort before I get him/her. I want to keep it indoors. How do I know which heat lamp/uv lamp to go for? There are lots of different watt ones to select from. I also would like to know what to use on the base of the housing?

Thanks in advance (sorry it is a total newbie question) x

I can only tell you what i do...........i have an Arcadia 12% uvb strip light & starter, a 60w spot light for heat on a dimmer thermostat, set at 34c, cool end is 20ish. I use steralised top soil for substrate.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply. That's really helpful. I will have another look at the lighting and look for the soil too. I am so excited, I will be buying bit by bit now so that I am prepared for when my tort comes to live with me!

Thanks again The advice is really appreciated x

Hi Snibbug I went to get some top soil from Wickses a couple of weeks ago (I like theirs - sad I know!) but they didnt have any & said probably wouldnt now until the spring. Tried a normal B & Q had none either, had to go to B & Q Warehouse, so if you have one of them near you may be worth heading straight there as I think they keep things in stock all year round.

Dont know what your going to use for a table, ready made off line or an old bookcase or the likes but you could seal it with a water based varnish or use lino, or thick plastic - they sell self adhesive flooring tiles in the £ shop which work well too.

Take a look through the housing thread for ideas you can get a "combined bulb" which provides heat & UV, there are several types: Arcadia, megaray or solarglow. Wattage is 100w, 120 & 160watt. The higher the rating the further away it usually needs to be as theyre hotter. I have found 100/120 watt to be adequate for my torts needs. (meds, Marginated & Hermans)

Have you definately decided on a Marginated?

Thank you Lynn, I will have a look on ebay. I am thinking I want to buy a ready made table or similar. That's a really good tip about sealing it, thanks.

I looked at the combined heat and UV and I am tempted by them, I will be getting them bit by bit until tort is ready for me Yes I am decided on a Marginated, I will be having one of Laura's

Thank you so much for replying to my thread x x x

I currently have 2 indoor rabbit cages, one is massive and the other is smaller. I am just not sure at the moment whether I want to do that. Long term I think it will be better if I have a tort table or similar

Thanks again x x x
